Mary Jo Clark and Pat Heiny help organizations, corporations, and communities develop effective 21st Century leadership and visions. Whether making presentations for state or national meetings, facilitating visioning efforts, expediting community collaborations, or developing a learning community, Contemporary Consulting utilizes interactive, participatory, reflective training.

Pat Heiny
Known as the leadership experts, Pat and Mary Jo offer training in servant leadership, customer service, collaboration, consensus, visioning, empowering others, creativity and creating a learning community.

Current Work

They are currently directing the Kansas Health Foundation Community Leadership Initiative. This project, sponsored by the Kansas Health Foundation, desires to make Kansas the best place to raise a child and believes that leadership development is the key. In that ongoing project, Mary Jo and Pat are working with an additional 25 Kansas communities to develop effective leadership. Another KHF project, the Master Facilitator Initiative is designed to equip a cadre of 60 people with facilitation skills that will be utilized throughout the state of Kansas, helping non-profits and other organizations work more effectively.

Mary Jo and Pat created and are implementing a two year customer service project for the 275 employee St. Vincent Randolph Hospital. Through a series of bi-monthly sessions, all employees will focus on personal development, customer service, cohesive team work, positive attitude and changing the general culture of the hospital.

They are also currently providing facilitation and consulting services for the 4Community Impact Initiative in Wayne County, Indiana..

Other on-going projects include working with community leadership programs (both classes and board of directors) in various communities across the nation, including Lincoln, Nebraska; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Knoxville, Tennessee; Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Greensboro, North Carolina; Salem, Indiana; and Mobile, Alabama.

Past Work

Mary Jo and Pat created and directed the leadership development project, The Indiana Leadership Initiative, supported by the Lilly Endowment, Inc. This project was designed to enhance Indiana community leadership programs so that they could improve the way local communities solve issues. They have also worked with Quaker Oats, Kissimmee, FL; Jeans' Extrusions, Salem, IN, and Eastern Indiana Orthopedic Center, Richmond, IN.

They led the community-wide visioning process for Osceola County, FL, providing training for community-based facilitators and facilitating a large community visioning session. As an outgrowth of this process, they facilitated the fourth annual training session for all elected officials in Osceola County.

They have worked with the Missouri State Legislature to help them engage in team building and planning. They also facilitated a visioning retreat for the City of Prichard, Alabama.

Mary Jo has a B.A. in Communications. She served on the faculty of Wayne State University, Miami University, Southern Connecticut State College and Indiana University East. She taught public speaking, persuasion, discussion, group dynamics, interpersonal communications, argumentation, and debate. She also served as communications consultant for Earlham College's Institute for Executive Growth.

Pat Heiny has a B.A. in Home Economics and Mathematics and a M.S. in Science Education and Family Life and Sex Education. She has also taught Adult Basic Education. As Earlham College International School Project Coordinator, she was involved in the Indiana International Issues Task Force, funded by the Lilly Endowment and administered by the Indiana Humanities Council. She currently serves on the Board of School Trustees for the Richmond, IN Community Schools.
