Communications & Teambuilding
Sloop Providence or the Brandaris

Sloop ProvidenceThe communication workshop is similar for all sessions with the exception that it is customized to you and your industry. The teambuilding activity is what changes. In each of the workshops listed below we will have 3 or more teams working individually, on individual pieces. The teams are then brought together as one team to create one result. Teams must communicate and collaborate with each other in order to achieve results.

We believe that teambuilding challenges need to be unique and be tied back to the WorkPlace. The day starts with a communication workshop dockside (after all, you need to communicate if you’re going to be a team!) followed by a unique teambuilding experience aboard the Sloop Providence, an 18th century tall ship (square rigged sloop) or the Brandaris, a Dutch Sailing Ship.

Everyone is on equal ground where natural tendencies and work relationship come to the forefront.

By day’s end your team will have experienced both challenge and success bonding them as a group having had a unique adventure. They will leavewith the tools to communicate effectively within their team and with others outside the team.

The full day cost is $8,500.00 and includes breakfast, the dockside workshop, lunch and the afternoon teambuilding exercise on the Sloop. Larger groups can be accommodated on other vessels or multiple vessels and as such pricing would vary.

“The lesson that it takes teamwork to sail a ship translates to keeping a company afloat. That’s powerful.” Diane L. Fasching, Director of Gilbane University, Gilbane

“Sometimes, what your co-workers need more than anything else is the opportunity to step outside of the middle of the forest in a comfortable but invigorating setting, and communicate with each other on levels they never have before…and for reasons they never have before. That can be a huge win for any organization! The Sloop Providence on Narragansett Bay was a real treat…” Chris Hurd, Hurd Automotive

“Its two month’s after spending a day with WorkPlace Dynamics and we are still using the communication styles terminology. It’s amazing that they can still do that. I have recommended this day to the executive management team of my company.” David Zink, Blue Cross Blue Shield/Perot IT Team

Communications & Teambuilding
Ropes Course Workshop

The communication workshop is similar for all sessions with the exception that it is customized to you and your industry. The teambuilding activity is what changes. We will have 3 or more teams working individually, on individual pieces. The teams are then brought together as one team to create one result. Teams must communicate and collaborate with each other in order to achieve results.

We believe that teambuilding challenges need to be unique and be tied back to the WorkPlace. The day starts with a communication workshop (after all, you need to communicate if you’re going to be a team!) followed by a ropes course teambuilding experience assisted by the staff of the URI W. Alton Jones Executive Action Program.

Participants in this workshop build competency in Communication; Leadership; Teamwork; and Trust. By day’s end your team will have experienced both challenge and success bonding them as a group having had a unique adventure. They will leave with the tools to communicate effectively within their team and outside the team with others.

The program is based on a series of initiatives that are conducted outdoors following an experiential learning model. The afternoon is created by a representative from your company, the Alton Jones staff and WorkPlace Dynamics to accomplish your goals. Companies can choose from a variety of challenges each presented to be solved with the active involvement of all the members of the group. Some of the challenge elements available are:

Nitro Crossing – Objective – The group must make their way from one side of an imaginary “dangerous river” to the other side with the aid of a ropeswing. The group is not allowed to touch the surrounding “waters” at any point during the activity and if a penalty occurs, all group members must return and start again. Group members must remain on the landing platform until all have made it over.

Whale Watch – Objective – The group must mount a large 6’ wide by 16’ long “See-Saw” that is 14 inches above the ground without having to become unbalanced and touch the ground on either end. Once the group is on the platform, they are further challenged to switch sides, go to the far edge, walk around the perimeter and dismount with few or no touches to the ground.

Tension Traverse – Objective – Each participant walks on a suspended cable with the assistance of several ropes to aid their balance.

Wild Woosey – Objective – A pair of individuals works their way down a V-shaped suspended cable trying to lean in and balance off each other. The objective is to see how far down the cable the participants can go.

Trust Fall – Objective – Standing on an elevated platform 36 inches tall, a team member falls into the arms of the group. Each member takes a turn trusting and falling into the arms of his/her colleagues.

The Spider’s Web – Objective – The group must make their way through an oversized spider’s web. Once a group member has gone through an opening, it is closed to others. The challenge to the group is to have all members, regardless of size or weight, fit through some part of the web. Carefully planning and skillful implementation are key for this activity. If someone causes the bell to ring on the web, all group members must return and start again.

The Wall – Objective – The group must make their way up and over a 14- foot tall wall. Each member can help push one colleague up or pull one colleague over the wall and then must retire and let others push or pull. Modeled on an ancient Chinese military exercise, the Wall is a daunting challenge for most groups. For many groups, this is the capstone experience of the day.

Flying Squirrel – Objective – Using a climbing harness, participants are lifted straight up to a maximum height of 40 feet tethered to their colleagues by several ropes. Although the ride up is an individual experience, each teammember is responsible for the safety of the person in the harness. All can take a turn until everyone has had the opportunity to see what it’s like to fly like a squirrel!

Giant Swing – Objective – The same harness and apparatus for the Flying Squirrel is modified slightly to create the ability for the group to swing its team member from a height of 1 foot to 30 feet, depending on how much trust the individual has with the other members of the group and the skill of the group. The full day cost is $7,000.00 for up to 25 participants and includes the facility, breakfast, the workshop, lunch and the afternoon teambuilding at the URI Alton Jones Campus. The fee for additional participants, over the first 25 is $200 per person.

Communications & Teambuilding
Movement Workshop

The communication workshop is similar for all sessions with the exception that it is customized to you and your industry. The teambuilding activity is what changes. We will have 3 or more teams working individually, on individual pieces. The teams are then brought together as one team to create one result. Teams must communicate and collaborate with each other in order to achieve results.

We believe that teambuilding challenges need to be unique and be tied back to the WorkPlace. The day starts with a communication workshop (after all, you need to communicate if you’re going to be a team!) followed by a movement teambuilding experience assisted by the Island Moving Company, Newport’s Resident Dance Company.

Participants in this workshop build competency in Communication;
Leadership; Teamwork; and Creative Processes. By day’s end your team will have experienced both challenge and success bonding them as a group having had a unique adventure. They will leave with the tools to communicate effectively within their team and outside the team with others.

The workshop provides a comfortable and secure environment in which all participants, regardless of their position in the organization or expertise, can participate equally. The movement exercises help to: break down barriers that inhibit effective teamwork; experience leadership in action; discover how to lead by actions; learn the importance of developing good processes;observe the effects of individual contributions to the group product; and understand the importance and meaning of various styles of communication.

The full day cost is $7,500.00 and includes the facility, breakfast, the workshop, lunch and the afternoon workshop with the Island Moving Company “gang”. The fee for additional participants, over the first 25 is $200 per person.

“Creativity is important…art fosters it by freeing people up to think in unrestricted ways.” Glen Urban, Sloan School of Management

“The way you work together becomes more important than what official roles or titles are. You’ve got to be creative to do that.” Christie Jacobs, Forum Corporation.

Communications & Teambuilding
“Design and Build” Workshop

The communication workshop is similar for all sessions with the exception that it is customized to you and your industry. The teambuilding activity is what changes. We will have 3 or more teams working individually, on individual pieces. The teams are then brought together as one team to create one result. Teams must communicate and collaborate with each other in order to achieve results.

We believe that teambuilding challenges need to be unique and be tied back to the WorkPlace. The day starts with a communication workshop (after all, you need to communicate if you’re going to be a team!) followed by a “building and design” teambuilding experience.

Your group will embark on a unique adventure that will leave them deserted and separated with limited time, materials and communication. They will need to act independently to build a pathway that when completed will reunited them. It will take creativity, communication, teamwork and listening skills to accomplish this task.

By day’s end your team will have experienced both challenge and success bonding them as a group having “built” their way through the day. They will leave with the tools to communicate effectively within their team and outside the team with others.

The full day cost is $5,500.00 for up to 25 people and includes the facility, breakfast, the communication workshop, lunch and the afternoon workshop with WorkPlace Dynamics Design Team. There is an additional charge for more than 25 participants. The fee for additional participants, over the first 25 is $200 per person.
