Learning to Lead in an Economic Downturn

Remember just 18 months ago when if a body had a pulse you were tempted to hire it? Your workload was so heavy that most of your staff was operating well above their capabilities. If anyone mentioned training you would say "No Way! We are much to busy." even though you knew that literally all of your employees needed more learning. Well, are you too busy today?
Today companies are paring down their workforce and expecting the remaining employees to pick up the work that the others once did. Management and higher paid leaders of the organization are often the first to go leaving the remaining workers again operating well above their capabilities. We are not talking about technical capability. It's their leadership and management skills that need development. Employees are unprepared to handle the new responsibilities thrust upon them. The lack of training leaves employees unprepared for and uncertain about the future.
Carrying a heavy workload places extra stress on employees. Not having the tools necessary to deal with these new responsibilities leave them with the fear that they will be fired, laid off, or even left behind. Many will become paralyzed by their stress. Others will look for new positions that they feel better meet their needs and skill level if they are not given the tools to improve.
Training your employees is critical to the health of an organization in all economies. The cost of hiring new employees and/or dealing with employee burnout is much greater than the expense of keeping the ones you have no matter what the economy is doing. Training can help to engage your employees and relieve their stress by better preparing them to handle their new responsibilities.
Utilizing down time to teach employees the skills they need to be the next leaders of the organization is what smart business leaders are doing. Companies that engage their employees pull out of a downturn faster than those who do not. Instead of the bemoaning present slowdown, look at it as an opportunity to train and teach your staff so you, and they, are prepared for the next boom.
As the leaders of your company it's your job to create and maintain a continuous learning environment at all times. "Leaders create leaders who creates leaders…" They teach. Leadership has changed from the 80's. A leader used to be a "boss" but today they need to be a coach, a facilitator, and a teacher. Leaders who are still in the 80's tend to have a greater turnover in staff and lower profits than those who have learned to become a leader in the 21st century do. Steven Covey tells the story that compares the leader and business climate of the 80's to the coxswain who oversees the rowing crew, shouting out orders one by one on a calm lake. Today that business climate is a "white water" of change and rather than the one leader shouting orders, everyone in the crew on the raft, each with their own paddle, has to know what to do in order to bring the raft safely through the rapids. Even if there were one leader in that raft attempting to bark out orders, no one would hear him or her and the raft would capsize and the consequences might be fatal. The decision is yours. Will you shout against the rapids or teach and train your employees to paddle?
